As a recovering food addict and an Addiction Psychiatrist, I dreamed of cookbook that was humorous, informative and filled with tasty and nutritious recipes that were good for ones physical and emotional health. You see, most cookbooks offer recipes that are visually appealing and tasty but the taste is driven by such basic ingredients as butter, hydrogenated fats, Trans fats, sugar, enriched flour and sodium salt. These basic ingredients not only enhance the taste of food, at low cost, but they make us feel good, comforted and relaxed. So, it is no wonder why these ingredients have the power to make certain foods addictive because they act at the same areas of the brain as known drugs of addiction.
In completing the research for this cookbook, I learned that fruits and vegetables and even fish and poultry have their own sweetness, saltiness and fattiness, with the former having plant sterols. This cookbook will be a journey into the land of unfamiliar tastes that will quickly become familiar and that are the main purpose of this cookbook. The tasty recipes and meals in this book are calming, comforting and soothing naturally without the artificial, refined, processed sugars, flour, fat and salt that are addictive, increase cravings for more and add to our obesity epidemic.
The “Prescriptive Cuisine Cookbook” is informative and it allows you to create your own healthy and nutritious meals that will help you to take the weight off and keep it off. Each recipe gives you the calories, fat, sodium, fiber and protein content for each recipe. This allows you to get a daily count of your calories, increase your daily fiber and protein and decrease the amount of fat and sodium in your diet. This cookbook also tells you about the difference between an herb and a spice, informs you about the “vegetable imposters” and gives you practical information about using herbs and spices to naturally enhance the taste of vegetables, fish, poultry, dairy and even fruits. All in all the primary goals of this cookbook are as follows:
- To retrain your taste buds to easily identify those foods that are healthy and nutritious.
- To increase your familiarity with specific foods that was once unfamiliar.
- To support your weight-loss and weight-loss maintenance as you begin to use food as medicine.
This is the kind of cookbook I always wanted in my kitchen and now we have it!
